Invoice Generator with VAT
A UK VAT invoice must show the VAT amount separately from the net total — this generator is preset to the standard VAT rate of 20% and does exactly that. Change the rate for reduced or zero-rated work and the totals recalculate instantly.
The tool below starts with the tax name "VAT" and a 20% rate. Add your VAT number to your business details, fill in the invoice, and download the PDF. No account, no upload.
| Description | Qty | Price | Amount |
|---|---|---|---|
| Consulting services | 1 | $500.00 | $500.00 |

What a UK VAT invoice needs
HMRC requires a VAT invoice to include your business name and address, your VAT registration number, a unique invoice number, the date, the customer's details, a description of the goods or services, the net amount, the VAT rate applied and the VAT amount. The layout above covers every one of those fields.
- Standard rate — 20%. Applies to most goods and services. It is the default in this generator.
- Reduced rate — 5%. Applies to a short list, such as some energy-saving installations and children's car seats. Set the rate field to 5.
- Zero rate — 0%. Most food, books, newspapers and children's clothes. Set the rate to 0; the invoice will still show a VAT line at 0%, which keeps your records clean.
- Selling into the EU? B2B supplies are usually zero-rated in the UK with the customer's EU VAT number on the invoice — note their number in the client address block or the notes field.
If you are not VAT-registered, you must not charge VAT or issue VAT invoices — set the rate to 0 or remove the tax line by setting the rate field to 0. SwiftInvoice does not provide tax advice; confirm your obligations with HMRC guidance or your accountant.
VAT invoice FAQ
Is the 20% rate already set?
Yes. This page loads the generator with the tax name "VAT" and a 20% rate, the UK standard rate. Edit the rate field for reduced-rate (5%) or zero-rated (0%) supplies.
Where do I put my VAT number?
Add it to "Your address" or the notes field — for example a second line reading "VAT No: GB 123 4567 89". It prints on the invoice with your business details, as HMRC expects.
Can I invoice in euros or dollars?
Yes — pick USD, EUR, AUD, CAD or JPY from the currency selector. UK VAT amounts for your own returns still need a sterling conversion in your bookkeeping.
